New Lowell School Interpretive Sign Coming to the District
A new interpretive sign for The Historic Lowell School Building is coming to the District!
The District received a small grant from the History Colorado State Historical Fund (SHF) to create an interpretive sign telling the important story of The Historic Lowell School Building. REgeneration Development as the owner of the building provided the required 50% cash match to the District's SHF grant.
Thanks to the creativity, collaboration, and hard work of the entire project team including SHF staff, the final content for the interpretive sign has been approved by SHF! To see a larger version of the SHF-approved sign content, right click on the image above and select "Open Image in New Tab."
The SHF-approved sign content highlights key aspects of the building's rich history over the past 100 years as well as the building's exciting future, including:
- The significance of the building’s innovative Colorado architect Eugene Groves.
- The building’s past use educating generations of Grand Valley students as Lowell Elementary and R-5 High.
- The next chapter in the building's story as a new community hub in Downtown Grand Junction.
The sign will be fabricated in May and installed on private property in front of the Lowell School Building by early June.
Save the date of Saturday 6/14 for a “changing of the sign” ceremony in the morning (specific time TBA). This event is being held in coordination with R-5 High leadership, and will be part of the program for the R-5 High School Alumni Association's 2025 Reunion taking place that weekend. At this event, the original R-5 High sign will be donated by REgeneration Development to D51 for installation at the current R-5 High campus. Then the newly-installed interpretive sign for the Lowell School Building will be unveiled.
Please join the District in celebrating this new interpretive sign which conveys the important contributions of The Historic Lowell School Building and its architect Eugene Groves to the history of the Grand Valley and the state of Colorado!
